Fish: Estuary Beach Seine Sample Totals 1996 |
|
Caption: This Chart shows the various species caught in the Russian River estuary using a beach seine at four sites from July to November 1996. Seventeen species were captured, with 78 percent of the total represented by the five most abundant species. While topsmelt were the most numerous species captured, they were only collected in one sample at one site, Station #1 which is nearest the ocean. The mix of marine and freshwater species is indicative that the estuary had been opened to inflow of ocean water because of breaching for much of the summer. Steelhead were captured in every month in the beach seine samples. They were not caught in the slow moving otter trawl net, which samples deeper and sometimes saltier water.
