Temperature: Min, Max, Avg, Mattole Estuary (7' Deep), 2001 |
|
Caption: The daily average, minimum, and maximum water temperature in the Mattole River estuary at river mile 0.5 exceeded lethal temperatures for salmonids multiple times in late summer 2001. The 75 degree F (23.9 C) daily maximum for coho salmon was chosen as a threshold for the North Coast Watershed Assessment Program based on literature review. This value, however, is based on laboratory tests and much lower temperatures can cause mortality in the wild (see Temperature Background page). The thermograph was placed at a depth of 7 feet below the water surface by the Mattole Salmon Group using Forest Science Project protocols. Data analysis provided by the Regional Water Board.
