Fish: Outmigrant Catch by Species in Lower Mainstem, 2000 |
|
Caption: The Mattole Salmon Group operated a rotary-screw trap with a 5' diameter cone in the lower Mainstem Mattole River (river-mile 2.9, about 0.1 mile upstream from Mill Creek) in the spring and early summer of 2000. Total numbers of aquatic invertebrates captured in the lower Mainstem Mattole trap show that steelhead trout outmigrants were far more numerous than Chinook or coho salmon outmigrants, and that only five coho smolts were captured. Numbers of fish trapped cannot be construed as a fish population estimate because of unknown trap efficiency and avoidance of the trap by fish at higher flows.
