KRIS Battle Creek: Meta Information Page

This page contains detailed information about a data set in KRIS, including where the original data reside and how to contact the sources for the data. Data sets are linked to the appropriate page by means of the Meta Identifier. Many data sets can be linked to same page by sharing the same Meta Identifier.

Meta IdentifierTerraqua
Type of DataAquatic Data from Battle Creeks Sites
OriginatorMike Ward, Terraqua, Inc.
DescriptionTerraqua collected aquatic data at fifty sites in the Battle Creek watershed as part of the Battle Creek Watershed Assessment using US Forest Service protocols that enable results to be interpreted using the Ecosystem Management Decision Support model. Instream metrics included Rosgen Channel Type, surface fines less that 2 mm, median particle size distribution, large wood and pool frequency, residual pool depth, width to depth, sinuosity, gradient and aquatic insects. Upland data were supplied by Kier Associates, who carried out the parallel KRIS project.

Request LogTerraqua did not share data until April 2003 and production of the KRIS Battle Creek Version 2.0 was delayed because the Battle WA was late in delivery.
Receipt LogAcquired data from Ward in April 2003 and built rough KRIS Topics to assist in data reconnaissance. Did not get EMDS model results in electronic until November 2004.

Serial NameBattle WA
PurposeTo understand aquatic conditions and possible relationships to upland sediment sources in the Battle Creek watershed.
Data Quality InformationInadequate data available to quantify upland conditions, particularly timber harvest. No 10 m DEMs for slope or stream gradient using GIS classification. Hydrology data (USGS 1:100K) very poor.
Use ConstraintsRiparian condition cannot be accurately quantified using Landsat data because 1:100K stream center lines are off and small streams are not covered.
Supplemental InformationCharacterization of lower Battle Creek and restoration related to dams was covered in the Battle Creek Restoration Plan (Ward and Kier, 1999), including water temperature and flow. Kier Associates was contracted in parallel to Terraqua to build a KRIS Battle Creek Version 2.0 and to use GIS to characterize uplands. Their summary of results is available in both a separate report (Kier Assoc., 2003 in KRIS Bibliography) and as part of the Background pages of KRis Battle Creek V 2.0.

TitleBattle Creek Watershed Assessment
AbstractTerraqua, Inc. conducted an assessment of stream condition and sediment sources in the Battle Creek watershed in 2001 and 2002 on behalf of the Battle Creek Watershed Conservancy with funds provided by the federal Anadromous Fisheries Restoration Program. The purposes of this assessment were 1) to document existing stream conditions and develop a baseline against which future conditions can be compared and 2) to identify and prioritize for treatment sediment. sources within Battle Creek.
Other Citation DetailsField data collection for the Battle WA followed USFS guidelines for the Aquatic and Riparian Effectiveness Monitoring Program (AREMP) and several related publications (Gallo, 2002; Reynolds, 2001) are provided in the KRIS Bibliography.
