Click on image to enlarge (68K). This eroding bank on Orrs Creek is located near the Ukiah High School. The straight channel indicates former alteration of Orrs Creek in this reach. Bank erosion of this time is inevitable as the channel attempts to meander and displace energy. Aggressive bioremediation is necessary to stop the erosion and restore some habitat value. Here is the same site in Orrs Creek where irrigation is being installed to help plantings placed the previous spring. Photo by Joe Scriven of the E-Center.
Looking upstream at an Orrs Creek site where a compacted bank lacks functional riparian. While this area may not longer be grazed by livestock, the compacted soils require careful planting, watering, and protection to begin the reestablishment of riparian. Photo by Joe Scriven of the E-Center.
Looking downstream from the same point of the previous slide. The site was subject to riparian planting in 2001 but there was no survival due to desiccation and vandalism. Photo by Joe Scriven of the E-Center.
Lower Orrs Creek has long sections of straightened channel with revetment banks. This type of bank offers no stream shading and minimal habitat value. Photo by Joe Scriven of the E-Center.
An irrigation system was set up to support plantings of willow and native shrubs at this site (#17) in lower Orrs Creek. Photo by Joe Scriven of the E-Center.
This section of lower Orrs Creek is located below Highway 101. The denuded left bank is still in need of restoration as very few of the 2001 plantings survived. Photo by Joe Scriven of the E-Center.
