This photo was taken where Mark West Springs Road turns to Porter Creek Road (facing south) and shows the Mark West Creek riparian zone on the far side of the grassy field. Riparian species include oak and bay trees. The uplands of the are dominated by hardwoods and shrubs, with conifers only thriving in small patches, often in the draws where there is more water. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
This photo also shows the riparian of Mark West Creek and the slopes above but was taken looking southwest where the creek goes into the canyon. Note that conifers are thriving on the north facing slopes and steeper areas with topographic shading. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
Looking upstream at the Mark West Creek watershed presents a very different view with the conifers of the canyon below giving way to oak woodlands and grasslands. Large oaks provide the riparian cover for Mark West Creek at right which turns away from the road, heading up to the south in the hills east of Santa Rosa. Photo taken looking east. Porter Creek joins Mark west here from the left. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
This photo shows the upper Porter Creek watershed looking north where oak woodlands and patches of conifers give way to chaparral along the higher ridge in the distance. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
