This photo shows an ephemeral headwater channel of a tributary to Franz Creek next to Franz Valley School Road. The channel has coarse substrate and herbaceous riparian ground cover indicating that it is not likely a source of sediment during winter rains. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

Live oak form the riparian of this headwater seasonal tributary of Franz Creek as it passes next to an orchard in the background. This channel appears to have been straightened here, probably to accommodate more agricultural use, but the channel has been allowed to stabilize and now has a buffer of natural vegetation to filter overland flow from adjacent orchard. Franz Creek is shown in this photo where Franz Valley School Road. The canopy appears to be providing shade, particle size of the stream bed looks suitable for salmonid spawning and the creek is maintaining some surface flow and potential rearing habitat for juvenile steelhead. Photo taken looking downstream. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

Franz Creek is only partially visible looking upstream in this photo from a bridge on Franz Valley School Road because of the dense riparian vegetation. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

This photo shows another reach of Franz Valley Creek off Franz Valley Road, with a high amount of shade from riparian trees. Bay trees are an important riparian species in Franz Creek and a large bay tree frames much of the photo. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

Franz Creek is pictured here looking downstream where Franz Valley Road crosses it. The creek is running from oak woodlands into a steeper forested reach below. Note the conifers on the slopes in the upper tier of the riparian zone. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

This photo shows the channel of Franz Creek at the same location as Picture #6. Note the large size of stream substrate, with cobbles and small boulders dominating the stream bed in the riffle habitat shown here. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.

This photo shows Franz Creek's dry bed looking upstream of Chalk Hill Road. Substrate appears to be predominantly small gravel. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
