The Franz Creek watershed also has upper tributaries that rise in chaparral and oak woodlands, such as the one pictured here. The stream may still maintain cold water temperatures in this hot, Mediterranean climate because of the influence of ground water and topographic shading. Picture taken from Franz Valley School Road looking south. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
This photo was taken at the same location as Picture #2 but looking downstream or west in the Franz Creek watershed. Note that the vegetation down in the riparian area along the creek is much more lush than on the uplands in this area. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
This zoom in on the riparian zone of upper Franz Creek shows conifers and oaks thriving in the riparian zone while uplands are covered in chaparral. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
This photo shows a sharp contrast between coniferous forest and chaparral in the upper Franz Creek watershed. The patches of exposed bedrock could be of volcanic origin. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
Looking north on Franz Valley Road, oaks, conifers and even madrone create a tunnel of shade on a late afternoon in July. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
Oak woodlands cover the uplands in the Franz Creek watershed, shown in this photo looking southwest off Franz Valley Road. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
Afternoon light filters through oaks onto the green grass in the Franz Creek watershed. Wildlands covered with native flora provide healthy watershed areas which provide clean water to streams and valuable wildlife habitat. Photo taken looking northwest. Photo by Patrick Higgins. July 14, 2003.
