Fish: Estuary Beach Seine Sample Totals 1992-1993 |
|
Caption: This Chart shows the various species caught in the Russian River estuary using a beach seine in 16 samples at a number of sites from June 1992 to May 1993. While stickleback was the most numerous species in samples, Sacramento suckers and sculpin were also caught in many sets in near shore areas. Pacific herring juveniles were captured in the March and April 1993 samples, when herring entered the estuary to spawn. The dominance of freshwater fish reflects the fact that the estuary rarely breached in 1992, a very low flow and rainfall year. Shallow areas of the estuary sampled by the seine are less frequently affected by salt water, which is heavier than freshwater and tends to dominate deeper Russian River estuary channels.
