Habitat: Wood Count in Willow and Freezeout Streams |
|
Caption: The above chart shows results from large wood surveys conducted by Mendocino Redwood Company in 2000. The brown bars illustrate the density of all wood deemed to provide function for fish cover or bed scour. Functional wood count includes all wood except debris jams. The red bars illustrate the measured density of those pieces qualifying by size and stream channel width to provide key functions of channel shape and maintenance. The reference line is a target for appropriate key piece loading for a stream that has a bankfull width between 15-35 feet. Freezeout Creek is the only stream that meets the target of 4.9 key pieces per 100 meters. This target is from Bibly and Ward (1989) and is applicable to all streams except for the Freezeout Creek tributary, which has a target of 6.6 key pieces per 100 meters.
