Click on image to enlarge (100K). This is a photo of an unidentified location on the Navarro River, prior to barrier removal/modification, which was thought to be a form of restoration. Dams formed by large wood were thought to be potential impediments to fish passage. In fact, woody debris here has formed a slow-water pool with extensive cover, creating excellent habitat for juvenile salmonids. Photo is from the archives of E-Center/Mendocino Fisheries Program (formerly known as the Center for Education and Manpower Resources) of Ukiah, provided to KRIS by Joe Scriven. Photographer was likely William Kidd. The year of the photo is unknown but likely in the 1980's.
This photo shows the same unidentified location on the Navarro River after barrier removal/modification. Channel-spanning large woody debris has been cut into firewood-sized chunks, which will likely lead to a reduction in habitat complexity and quality, but which was thought to improve access for salmon and steelhead.
