In the Grave Creek demonstration project, approximately 1,000 feet of stream restoration work reshaped and stabilized the channel by using rock vanes and root wad complexes. This photo shows a bare, eroding cut-bank which is an active source of sediment. See Picture #3 to see how this problem was remedied. Photos provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Montana Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.
As part of the Grave Creek demonstration project a high eroding terrace was sloped back to an angle that could be re-vegetated. Rock was placed to help deflect current away from the toe of the stream bank and jute netting used to prevent surface erosion until vegetation can get established. Trees were also planted to accelerate riparian recovery. Photos provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Montana Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.
Final design for the Grave Creek demonstration project sponsored by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Montana Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program. Map by Water Consulting, Inc., Hamilton and Whitefish, Montana.
In the Grave Creek demonstration project a degraded headgate was replaced and a McKay fish screen (see Picture #6) was installed down stream of the new point of diversion. Photos provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Montana Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.
A McKay fish screen was installed on the Flannagan irrigation ditch to prevent loss of juvenile fish to the irrigation system. Photos provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Montana Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.
