Abstract:
Water temperatures on the Klamath River, CA were surveyed
using a helicopter mounted thermal infrared radiometer. The
survey was conducted in the mid-afternoon on July 27,1998 and
covered approximately 50 river miles (rm 134 to rm 184). Thermal images
were acquired at a rate of 1 image/second throughout the flight.
The point coverage contains the name and location of each image sample along
with the minimum/maximum temperature recorded in the image.
In addition, the median water temperatures were sampled at approximately
100 to 150 meter intervals throughout the survey and included in the attribute
file. The median temperatures provide a longitudinal profile of water temperature
at the time and date of the survey.

Procedures_Used:
This coverage is a point coverage generated from an airborne thermal infrared survey
of water temperatures on the Klamath River, CA. The survey was conducted using a
helicopter mounted thermal infrared (8-12u) radiometer and digitally recording images
at a rate of 1 image/second. As images are acquired, the data collection system
records the image name, GPS time, and geographic position (latitude, longitude). A
computer program is used to convert this information to a text file. The program also
converts the GPS positions from geographic lat/long to UTM Zone 10, NAD27.
The point coverage was created from the UTM coordinates contained in the text file.
The GPS positions (hence point locations) represent the location of the aircraft when
the image was acquired. There is no compensation for aircraft pitch and role. In
addition, the GPS coordinates were not differentially corrected.
A river mile associated with each image is added to the attribute file using the
dynamic segmentation features of Arc/Info. The Hydrographic Route Coverage for
Region1 (North Coast) was obtained from the CA Department of Fish and Game. The route
coverage was reprojected from Albers to UTM (zone 10). The "addroutemeasure" command
was then used to create an INFO file that contained the record#, stream, and measure.
The INFO file records that were associated with streams other then the Klamath River
were purged from the file. The "measure" was then added to the thermal coverage
attribute file using "joinitem".
A computer program was used to "read" through all of the thermal images and create a
file containing the image name and the minimum and maximum temperatures contained in
each image. The minimum and maximum image temperature values are included in the
thermal attribute file using the "joinitem" command. The "measure" was converted to
miles and compared to the georeferenced USGS 7.5' Quad Maps.
Finally, median water temperatures were sampled from the thermal images at an average
interval of between 4 to 6 images. These values were entered directly into the
point coverage attribute file.

Positions were collected using a 12 channel GPS,
but not differentially corrected. Furthermore, positions represent the
aircraft location at the time the images were acquired.
Positions errors of up to 500 meters were observed.
Water temperatures derived from the imagery were compared to in-stream
data loggers. The temperatures from the imagery were within +/-2*C
of the in-stream measurements. Typical accuracies for this data collection system are +/- 0.4*C.
