This photo shows the fish screen intake, designed by the Shasta CRMP coordinator Dave Webb, strapped to the top of Dave's truck before installation at the Nelson Ranch. This is one of several of these innovatively designed screens installed in the Shasta Valley. Photo from Webb (2002). See Info Links for more information. This metal cylinder is strong but light "so that one or two people working with only hand tools would be able to both install the screen and later remove the screen and most of the piping each winter" (Webb, 2002).
This is a photo of the final fish screen installed in the Shasta River at the Nelson Ranch. The pipe intake and supports are hinged so they can be retracted during high winter flows. Photo from Webb (2002). See Info Links for more information.
Close up of fish screen water intake at the Nelson Ranch. "This system is designed to meet the pump capacity of 1000, gal/minute (approximately 2 cfs.) within the criteria jointly agreed upon by both the California Department of Fish and Game, and the National Marine Fisheries Service to protect salmon and steelhead....It has no moving parts, requires no additional power, and reduces the labor input of the landowner from what it had been without the screen." (Webb, 2002). See Info Links for more information.
