Riparian trees encroach from both banks in this reach of the Shasta River below Big Springs Creek.
Lush emergent aquatic vegetation grows in the margins of the Shasta River below Big Springs Creek. Willows, grasses and sedges border the stream. The sparse shrub and conifer vegetation in upland areas reflect very harsh site conditions.
This reach of the Shasta River downstream of Montague Grenada Road has a canopy of various willow species. Grasses rushes and sedges on the stream margin also protect bank stability. Irrigation tailwater from adjoining fields is excluded from the river by a low berm, not visible in the photo.
This photo shows a healthy reach of the Shasta River below Julian Creek on the Freeman Ranch. The river runs through the willows and water birch across the center of the photo. Some portions of the riparian are more dominated by cattails and tules because of site conditions.
