| Caption: The California Department of Fish and Game has operated downstream migrant traps in the Shasta River to learn more about the life history of Chinook salmon juveniles. In 1981 and 1988 the majority of downstream migrants emigrated by mid-May. The number of downstream migrants can only be viewed as an index of abundance because trap efficiency can vary with flows. For example, in late April 1981 there was a significant rain event that may have reduced the number of migrants for the period ending May 1. Much of the downstream migrant data has been collected as part of the Natural Stocks Assessment Program that is funded through the national Sport Fish Restoration Fund. Although there are more recent data for downstream migrant trapping since 2000, there was no budget for integration into Version 3.0 of KRIS. | |
