This area of the Moose Side Channel would be ideal habitat for young salmon and steelhead with complex cover of small woody debris from fallen hardwoods, but low flows often left the channel dry in summer (see Picture #4) . September 1989. Photos provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Moose Side Channel provides excellent slow water habitat for juvenile Chinook salmon in the run habitat at the top of the photo during high flow releases from Lewiston Dam. The high gradient riffle habitat in the foreground would probably be preferred by steelhead young. November 1991.
Moose Side Channel during 300 cubic foot per second (cfs) releases from Lewiston Dam in September 1989. Photos provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Moose Side Channel at 150 cfs with channel almost dry during September 1989. Changes grade and bed elevation after sediment transport, adjustment of inlets and other factors made side channels like this one not cost-effective to maintain. Photos provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
