Fish: Redwood Creek Juvenile Salmonid Abundance (Fish/100ft) 2001 |
|
Caption: The graph shows the average estimated number of juvenile salmonids per 100 feet at several sites in Redwood Creek during October 2001. The length of the surveys is on the axis at right and sites on the X-axis are in downstream order to the right. Coho salmon density was high at the upstream sites, but overall density was reduced by the lack of coho at downstream sites. Overall steelhead trout young-of-year were lower than all previous years of sampling, although overall steelhead yearling density was similar to previous years. Note that the lower two sample sites were reduced to a few isolated, stagnant pools with low dissolved oxygen levels, and flow was also low at the upstream sites (Smith, 2001). Winter storms ended early this year and as noted above flows in the stream were generally low by summer. Data were collected by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Dr. Jerry J. Smith of San Jose State University. See Picture for a map of the sampling sites and Info Links for more information.
