INSTITUTE FOR FISHERIES RESOURCES GIS TECHNICAL WORK GROUP -- GIS METADATA LIBRARY: Sonomarin COVERAGE NAME: mmwd_temps.shp METADATA FILE: mmwd_temps.shp.txt METADATA FILE DATE: November 8, 2002 METADATA PREPARER: Eli Asarian Institute for Fisheries Resources (IFR) 791 Eighth Street Ste. N Arcata, CA 95521 (707) 822-9428 COVERAGE DESCRIPTION: This shapefile shows automated probe water temperature monitoring sites in Lagunitas Creek and it tributaries, conducted by Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD). Methods: Spatial data for these rows were generated from latitude/longitude coordinates by Paul Trichilo using ArcInfo, then reprojected into UTM Zone 10, NAD 27. All lat/long coordinates were created by Randy Arena (Operational Planning, MMWD). Arena described his method for generating the coordinates like this: "These are taken off Topozone.com and are off older quad maps so they are not to terribly accurate." One temperature site (mmwd2, Meadow Way on San Geronimo Creek) had faulty coordinates (it ended up in SF Bay) and was deleted (hopefully Randy Arena of MMWD will send us new coordinates soon). VITAL STATISTICS: Datum: NAD 27 Projection: UTM Units: Meters 1st Std. Parallel: 34 00 00 (34.0 degrees N) 2nd Std. Structure for attribute table Column Column name 5 ORIG_ID 6 STRMNAME 7 HOTLINK 8 MWAT16PT8 9 MWAT_1995 10 MWAT_1996 11 MWAT_1997 12 MWAT_1998 13 MWAT_1999 14 MWAT_2000 15 MWAT_2001 16 MWAT_2002 ORIG_ID: This field contains the location code used in the KRIS chart and source tables that contain the temperature data. STRMNAME: The name of the temperature monitoring station. HOTLINK: This field is for hotlinking between maps and KRIS topics. It is the name of a KRIS topic. MWAT16PT8: Of the years in which data was collected, how often did MWAT exceed 16.8 °C? The significance of 16.8 °C is described in the KRIS Temperature background page at www.krisweb.com. MWAT_YEAR: The maximum annual floating weekly average water temperature (in °C) for each year in which data was collected during at least the majority of the summer months. MWAT values were derived from source tables (wq_goga_2000source.DB, tempraw_goga_95_01.dbf) of raw temperature data using KRIS, MS Access, and MS Excel. A detailed description of methods is contained in the file "Directions for building MWAT source table.txt" in the "KRIS_Tools" folder at the IFR - KRIS office in Arcata. Data was collected by GOGA. DATA QUALITY ASSESSMENT: Unknown, as it depends on the accuracy of the latitude/longitude coordinates that this layer was created from. The maximum accuracy is one second of latitude or longitude, which is approximately 30 meters. The MMWD staffperson who generated the latitude/longitude coordinates (see Methods, above) wrote "These are taken off Topozone.com and are off older quad maps so they are not to terribly accurate." My best guess is that worst-case scenario for accuracy is 450 meters, but that most points are probably within 100 meters.
