PurposeTo determine the health and ecological diversity of the system.
Supplemental InformationField methodology included seine netting, visual inspections of habitat and species, aquatic insect collection, water and air measurements, and collection samples for lab analysis. Five samples were collected on the middle stretch of Corte Madera Creek starting from above the cement US Army Corps of Engineers channel, running through the College of Marin, to just below the Creek Park in San Anselmo. Fish tissue was also tested for organophosphorous pesticides and chlorinated acid herbicides. Habitat Assessment taken every 1,500 feet along each discrete segment of Corte Madera drainage system and each evaluation transect consisted of a 40 foot segment of the stream length. Assessments were performed on Cascade, Corte Madera, Fairfax, Ross, San Anselmo, and Sleepy Hollow Creeks. Information collected included, mean bank slope, overhead canopy, riparian communities and land use, mean bank height, channel depths, widths, pool lengths and depths, substrate characteristics, and degree of stream channel modifications. Water and sediment samples taken below every incoming segment of the stream system. Initial sampling done on June 24, 1992 at six creeks, Sleepy Hollow, Fairfax, San Anselmo, Ross, and upper and lower Corte Madera and second sampling on February 18, 1993 at same sampling sites plus San Geronimo and Cascade Creeks. For the initial sampling, a hydrolab was used to provide immediate analysis of DO, pH, temperature, and conductivity. Additional laboratory work was done for total suspended solids, phosphorus (total and ortho), nitrogen series (including total kjeldahl ammonia), and chlorophyll A. Sediment samples were analyzed for silver, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, nickel, lead, selenium, zinc, polynuclear aromatic carbons, and chlorinated herbicides. For the second sampling, the flow was too high to collect sediment and fisheries data. Temperature and DO were measured in the field. Additional laboratory work was done for total suspended solids, phosphorous (total and ortho), nitrogen series (including total kjeldahl ammonia), and the metal series: silver, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, nickel, lead, selenium, and zinc. Included with sampling results are the detection limits for the laboratory analysis.
